Funny. But dark. Very, very dark.
Set in 1970s East Van, Cheyenne Rouleau‘s The Sunrise Betties is a hilariously subversive crime thriller involving an all-female street gang who inadvertently start a turf war with a prominent gangster and find their loyalty tested with the arrival of a crooked VPD officer promising protection.
Equally inspired by the classic gangster films of Scorsese and Tarantino, and the lack of female representation therein, Rouleau set out to create a story of bad-ass women descending into a world of mayhem, music and murder. The play was also inspired by Aaron Chapman’s The Last Gang In Town: The Epic Story of The Vancouver Police vs. The Clark Park Gang and details a relatively unknown chapter of Vancouver’s sordid history.
The Sunrise Betties will be receiving ongoing development throughout 2021/22 and is slated for a 2023 production.
