A note on self-identifying and privacy: ITSAZOO’s creative team knows from personal experience that it can feel weird to share personal information like gender identity or sexual orientation when submitting for an audition. So here’s our take: feel free to share those things or self-identify if you feel it connects you to one of the characters we’ve listed, and know that we will only share your info within our casting team. We are also happy to hear about any barriers you might have when it comes to fully participating in an audition, and will not use that information to exclude you from consideration.
ITSAZOO hopes to receive applications from candidates with a broad range of backgrounds including, but not limited to: race, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, class and physical ability.

About the Play:
Set in 1970s East Van, Cheyenne Rouleau‘s The Sunrise Betties is a hilariously subversive crime thriller involving an all-female street gang who inadvertently start a turf war with a prominent gangster and find their loyalty tested with the arrival of a crooked VPD officer promising protection.
Intimacy/Violence Notice:
No intimacy will be required or depicted during auditions.
The play includes graphic violence, romantic intimacy, and lots of swearing! For any specific content inquiries, email auditions@itsazoo.org.
Casting for the Following Roles:
SHIRLEY (she/her) 50s/60s. Any ethnicity. SHIRLEY is the cutthroat leader of the Betties who will do whatever it takes to defend what’s hers. Think Jack Nicholson from The Departed.
GWEN (she/her) 20s-early 30s. Any ethnicity. Bisexual. This role includes depiction of romantic intimacy (kissing, cuddling) with two other characters. Commanding, charismatic, high-status, Gwen leads the Betties when Shirley is away. Ability to play guitar is an asset.
BETH (she/her) 20s. Any ethnicity. Lesbian. This role includes depiction of romantic intimacy (kissing, cuddling) with another character. The newest addition to the Betties, BETH is loyal to GWEN and desperate to prove her value to SHIRLEY. Quiet, violent when pushed.
SUZY (she/her) 20s. Any ethnicity. Feral, unintentionally funny, violent, best friends with KATE. Bad at planning, good at hitting things.
Please Note: We can only consider Vancouver-based artists at this time. The roles of KATE and JIM have already been cast.
To submit, please send a headshot and resume (name the files to include your name, please!) and indicate the role(s) you are interested in to Paige Louter at auditions@itsazoo.org with the subject: “Sunrise Audition Submission”. Only those selected for an audition will be contacted.
